Vitae comes with built-in categories like Food, Transport, and Shopping, each with finer sub-categories. You can adjust their order and hide the ones you don’t use — once arranged, categories appear in your order and preferences when logging, with frequently used ones up front so picking is faster.
Steps
- Open Category Management. Path: Settings → Finance → Category Management, where all top-level categories are listed (Food, Transport, Shopping…).
- Reorder top-level categories. Tap the reorder icon () in the top-right to enter reorder mode, then press and drag categories up or down to move frequently used ones to the front.
- Manage sub-categories. Tap into any top-level category (e.g. “Food”) to see its sub-categories (Meals, Takeout, Drinks…): each has a toggle controlling whether it shows when logging, and you can also tap in the top-right to reorder.
- Whole-category visibility toggle. The “Show when logging” switch at the top of a category’s detail page controls whether the entire top-level category appears when logging.
Add Your Own Categories
Built-in categories not enough? At the bottom of a category’s detail page, tap “Add Sub-category”, then pick an icon and give it a name (e.g. add “Dining” under “Food”). After saving, it appears among your categories when logging, just like the built-in ones.
- Open a top-level category. In Category Management, tap into a category like “Food” to see its existing sub-category list.
- Tap “Add Sub-category” at the bottom. The button is at the very bottom of the sub-category list.
- Pick an icon + name it. Choose an icon from the icon grid and enter a category name.
- Save. The new category is added to this top-level category right away, ready to pick when logging.
Once Arranged: Smoother Logging
Once category order and visibility are set, when you go back to manual logging, the category picker shows exactly the way you defined it — frequently used ones up front, hidden ones gone. No more scrolling through a long list every time; logging an entry is faster.
FAQ
How do I move a category to the very front?
In Settings → Finance → Category Management, tap the reorder icon () in the top-right, then press and drag that category to the top. Sub-categories work the same way on their category’s detail page.
Some categories I never use — can I remove them?
Yes. Tap into that category and turn off the toggles for sub-categories you don’t use; or simply turn off “Show when logging” at the top, and the whole category won’t appear when logging. Turn it back on anytime you need it.
Will reordering or hiding affect entries I’ve already logged?
No. These settings only affect the display order and visibility of categories when logging; your existing records are not affected in any way.
Built-in categories aren’t enough — can I add my own?
Yes. Tap into the relevant top-level category, tap “Add Sub-category” at the bottom of the sub-category list, then pick an icon, name it, and save. The new category will appear in your choices when logging.
